A City That Grew Up Fast
Saraland started as Alvarez Station, after a Spanish land grant, and later became Cleveland Station. It’s said to be named for Sara, the wife of C.J. DeWitt, who opened the first post office in 1895. When Saraland incorporated in 1957 it had just 125 residents. Annexations pushed that to 4,595 by 1960, and the 2020 census counted 16,171, making it the third largest city in Mobile County.
