From German Colony to Small Town

In 1903 the Baldwin County Colonization Company, a group of German businessmen from Chicago, bought land here and divided it into farm tracts. The first families arrived in January 1904, and the town took its name from the Elberta peach. Elberta incorporated in 1952 and had 1,974 residents in the 2020 census. Many of the original families still farm nearby. The German Sausage Festival started in 1978 as a fundraiser for the volunteer fire department, and it’s still held each spring and fall.
